What kind of town is Hampstead?

The Town of Hampstead was incorporated on 19 February 1914, when the Quebec Legislature passed Bill 59. Its founders, a group of businessmen led at first by the engineer Sir Herbert Holt, laid it out on the nineteenth-century garden city model: low density, generous lots, plenty of trees and curved streets meant to discourage through traffic. Founding Mayor James Baillie held the first council meeting on 7 April 1914. The town resisted annexation attempts in 1916 and 1924, and by the 1920s it had strict building rules and an architectural advisory committee. Statistics Canada counted 7,037 residents in 2021. The town hall at 5569 Queen Mary Road sends the municipal tax bill and the transfer-duty bill, not a Montreal borough office.

How much is the welcome tax in Hampstead?

The two lower brackets are the provincial ones for 2026; the 3% rate is the Town’s own. Montreal’s scale, by comparison, steps up to 2% at $552,300, 2.5% at $1,104,700 and 3.5% only above $2,136,500. The Town’s 2026 comparative factor is 1.00. At the four-quarter house median of $1,859,375, the duties come to about $45,607, against about $36,310 on Montreal’s scale. The Town bills the buyer, who pays in one instalment within 30 days of the bill.

This is general information about how a sale usually works in Quebec. It is not legal, tax or financial advice, and it is not a promise about your price or your date. A notary — and, if your file needs it, a lawyer or a licensed insolvency trustee — applies the rules to your situation. Sending an address does not commit you to sell.
